PRESS RELEASE: February 10, 2010

The City of Lewiston is now accepting applications for the annual $500 Alfred A. Plourde Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each year to the Lewiston High School (LHS) senior who is pursuing a post-secondary education and shows the most interest and promise in a career in public service. The scholarship--in memory of one of Lewiston's most popular mayors--was established by donations from friends and family in 1990.

The application deadline is April 15, 2010, and an application must consist of the following: an essay of 1,000 words or less entitled,"The Role of the Young Political Leader in the New Millennium;" a copy of high school transcript; a statement of public service career goal and major in post-secondary education; and name, address, and contact phone number.

Following the April 15th deadline, Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert, Sr., will narrow down the applicants to three (3) finalists, and the winning LHS senior will be selected by the Lewiston City Council. The scholarship award will be presented to the winning student at the May 4, 2010, City Council meeting by Council President Steve Morgan. Students may forward their application to Community Relations Coordinator Dottie Perham-Whittier, City Administrator's Office, Lewiston City Hall, 27 Pine Street, Lewiston ME 04240-7242 or via dottie@ci.lewiston.me.us
