PRESS RELEASE: May 25, 2007
The Lewiston Youth Advisory Council (LYAC)
will formally launch their new U BOOZE U LOOZE (UBUL)
web site at a press conference scheduled for Wednesday, May 30, 2007.
The event will be held at 2:45 p.m. in the
first-floor Council Chambers at Lewiston City Hall, 27 Pine Street.
Members of the press and public are welcome to attend. At the event,
UBUL posters will also be unveiled,
the artwork of which has been donated by GSM Group of Lewiston.
Advanced Microsystems has been working with LYAC to
develop the site and will also host the site on behalf of the group. The
site is a creative combination of information about underage drinking and
provides an on-line opportunity for students nationwide to "join" the
UBUL "stand." Youth will be able to sign-on to the campaign and then
print their own membership certificate.
The U BOOZE U LOOZE web site will be
reviewed on the Chambers' drop-down screen, and members of the youth council
will share details of their ongoing underage drinking youth-to-youth
awareness initiative. Ally Beaucage, Chair of LYAC, will lead the event's
agenda, which will also feature comments by Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert, Sr.
U BOOZE U LOOZE
was established by LYAC following Ashley Morgan, Vice-Chair, expressing to
the group in the fall of 2006 her concerns about underage drinking. After
much discussion and meetings with the Maine Attorney General’s Office;
Healthy Androscoggin; Lewiston High School substance abuse counselor; and
Lewiston Middle School principal & health teacher, LYAC decided to move
forward with a youth-to-youth initiative
encouraging young people to talk with each other about the health dangers &
consequences of underage drinking.
Since then, LYAC has filmed an underage drinking
video which has been shown to 8th grade health classes at Lewiston Middle
School; made public presentations, to include the State Capitol in response
to the US Surgeon General's recent "Call to Action" to prevent and
reduce underage drinking; have been distributing UBUL pens and keychains
sponsored by Northeast Bank, and will be featuring UBUL at the June 2007
All-America City competition in Anaheim, California. In the very near
future, their outreach will also be featured on the National League of
Cities web site.
