The City Building, Police Station, Fire Department, Library and Public Works
Building are connected via fiber optic cable for data communications. Outlying
departments have cable modem capability for remote access to major system
information.
Major systems are in place for Financial applications (including
Payroll, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, Budget Analyst, Police Public Safety
and Emergency Dispatch and Records Management, Utility Billing and other
specific applications. Other systems reside on the respective Networks including
Voting Registration, General Assistance, Building Permits and Code Enforcement.
The Networks are
complimented with Novell GroupWise Email, and the City controls Internet access
via a DSL line direct connection, administered with the Novell Border Manager
and Novell Netware Administration product line on the City Hall LAN.
Not including the
School Department, the City has approximately 250 personal computers.
A new fiber
optic/cable modem infrastructure was developed in coordination with the City of
Auburn, utilizing the Adelphia Cable system
throughout the 2 cities. This infrastructure
provides additional connectivity with Lewiston
Schools and the City of Auburn and Auburn Schools. In addition, all
municipal buildings are connected via this backbone.
