Councilor Rousseau and the Lewiston Youth
Advisory Council raised $3,058 at their January 2, 2004, "Rock for
the Clock." As such, they will receive their full $2,500 match from
Modern Woodmen . . . resulting in
$5,573 for the multi-tier clock siting project!
The funds will be utilized
towards the multi-level siting of the City's 1891 E. Howard clock,
the mechanisms of which were restored in 2002 by Balzer Family Clock
Works.
Once completed, the
multi-level siting will include the mechanisms encased in glass
coupled by a 14-foot swinging pendulum inside City Hall's Pine
Street entrance, which will also be encased in glass. A rod will
extend to City Hall's tower enabling the correct time to be seen by
the community via new clock faces.

will become a

On December 23, 2003, LYAC Chair Tarrah Bowen
participated in a panel discussion focusing on "Altruism vs. Self
Interest." The panel discussion will be aired on
Maine Public Television's "Maine Watch"
(12/26/03 at 8:30 p.m.). Tarrah talked
about LYAC's effort to "give back" to the community and the members'
commitment to making a difference.

LYAC Members Attend
"Reasons for Hope" Conference

|
On
November 19, 2003, LYAC members Lisa Kimball, Allyson Beaucage, and
Kelin Sevit, along with Co-Advisor Dottie Perham-Whittier, attended
the Communities for Children & Youth "Reasons for Hope"
conference at the Augusta Civic Center. During the day-long
conference, the LYAC members attended workshops that advocated the
importance of youth community involvement. They also had the
opportunity to meet Governor John E. Baldacci, First Lady Baldacci,
and motivational speaker Marc Kielburger, the latter of whom greatly
inspired the LYAC members to
"find
their passion & go for it." |

| "Three members of the
Lewiston Youth Advisory Council participated in the opening
celebration of the "B Street Community Center" at the corner of
Birch & Bates, Lewiston, on October 24th. The center is the site of
numerous community agencies serving as a tremendous resource to
neighbors in the downtown. LYAC's Katie Lauze did a musical set
during the event and LYAC's Tarrah Bowen & Kelin Sevit helped out
with facepainting to both children & adults! Kelin also opened the
official ceremonies by singing the National Anthem." |

On
October 6, 2003, members of the local Optimists Club presented a $50
check to the Lewiston Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) in support of
their effort to site Lewiston's historic 1891 E. Howard timepiece as
a multi-level attraction at City Hall. The clock mechanisms, now on
display on the building's third floor, formerly resided in City
Hall's tower prior to 2002 restoration by Balzer Family Clock Works
of Freeport. The Optimists Club's decision to contribute was the
result of a recent LYAC presentation before the local club.
The youth council is
currently speerheading the $22,000 fundraising initiative which
willl enable the clock mechanisms to be placed on the second floor
landing of City Hall, with a 14-foot pendulum extending through the
floor to the Pine Street entrance. Both items will be encased in
glass. Engineering will also be undertaken to enable the building's
new clock faces to show the correct time to the community. Working
in partnership with Councilor Norm Rousseau, nearly $14,000 has been
raised thus far.
Optimists Club Alina
Burke, shown here presenting the check, commended the youth council
for their leadership within the community. Since 1919, Optimists
Clubs have been known for meeting the needs of young people in
communities worldwide. With a slogan of "Bringing Out the Best in
Kids," club members believe in young people's potential and strive
to empower them to be the best they can be.

The Lewiston Youth Advisory
Council (LYAC) completed its noise
pollution awareness campaign on
May 6, 2003 with a presentation to St. Joseph's School kindergarten
student Caleb Labrie. Labrie was the winner of the council's
noise pollution awareness K-3 poster contest. The council received
15 poster entries, and the winning entry was determined by how well
the contents encouraged residents to respect their neighbors and to
"keep the sound down." Labrie is shown here receiving a certificate
of recognition and gift card to Mr. Paperback from LYAC Chair Tarrah
Bowen. Bowen noted at the presentation, "During our awareness
campaign, we wanted to involve the community and to reach out to
