MDOT Russell Street – Highway
Reconstruction
|
$2,000,000 |
|
The Russell
Street project actually started in 1999 as a result of comments
received during a public meeting for the Main Street Overpass
project in the spring of 1999. A study was completed in late 2002.
The study and ultimate final design resulted in the project adding
median strip with plantings, narrowing lanes (to help slow traffic),
crosswalks with warning lights, improved signage, upgraded &
coordinated traffic signals, left-turn lanes at intersections, and
replacing 122 trees needing to be removed with 250 trees & shrubs.
Work is about to begin. Gendron & Gendron, Inc (a local Lewiston
company) was awarded the $1,850,030.30 construction contract with
Maine DOT using funds from the American Recovery Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
By doing so, no local match was required saving the City of Lewiston
nearly $200,000. The work is expected to be completed by June 2010.
