In 1998,
in an effort to reach out to youth in the community, the Shining Stars Program
idea was developed by Community Relations Coordinator Dot Perham-Whittier who
promptly received the support of Mayor Kaileigh A. Tara, resulting in the
program being run through the Mayor's Office.
Each
year in early spring (Feb), the program is kicked off, whereby people within our
community are asked to nominate a Lewiston youth (ages 12-18) who is positively
contributing to this community.
To nominate a person, a submission consists of
a one-page essay and a photo. Send your submission to Community Relations
Coordinator Dot Perham-Whittier, c/o Lewiston City Building, 27 Pine St.,
Lewiston, ME 04240.
Reasons for nomination include, but are not
limited to, the following--with the hopes of recognizing some "unsung
heroes."
- Outstanding integrity and character
- Commitment to family
- Religious service
- Athletic achievements
- Commitment to school and part-time job
- Community service
- Academic achievements
- Courageous act
- Theatrical/musical achievements
- Special abilities
Upon
receipt of all Shining Star nominations each year, a Selection Committee
(consisting of the Mayor, Program Developer, and two community members) is
assembled to review all nominations. Each nomination is thoroughly reviewed, and
the Committee ultimately picks ten youth who will serve as the current year's
"Lewiston Shining Stars."
Each of the ten receive a
certificate and "Shining Star" pin from the City, along with a variety
of donated gifts from area businesses. Their names also go into a hat for a
grand prize drawing, which is also a donated item(s).
The other nominees receive a
certificate and a gift, such as a star-shaped keychain, from the City..
