Single Stream Recycling
Lewiston has Single Stream Recycling! Materials Can Be Recycled with No Need to Pre-Sort!
Recycling Helpful Hint! - Please put trash and recyclable containers on different sides of driveway, along with visible "RECYCLING" stickers (2-4 recommended) on one of the containers. These steps will help guide contracted trash and recyclable collection as to residents' intentions.
Solid Waste & Recycling Brochure
For recycling, a standard container (36 gallons) with a lid is recommended. Recycling stickers are available for placement on the outside of your recycling container. View our Accepted Materials for Recycling List and our Items Not Accepted as Recyclable List to learn about what items we can and cannot accept.

Further Information
The Solid Waste Division manages the collection of single stream recyclable waste material from the City’s residents (via curbside collection), the public schools, and recyclable material brought to the City’s solid waste facility for disposal. Single stream recyclable waste material includes items such as - newspaper, plastic containers (numbers 1 through 7), corrugated cardboard, glass bottles and jars, office paper, mixed paper, hardcover books and cans (aluminum and steel).
Recycle stickers for your recycle container(s) are available at the following locations:
- Lewiston City Hall - 2nd Floor, 27 Pine Street
- Lewiston Public Works, 103 Adams Avenue
- Lewiston Solid Waste Facility, 420 River Road
The City contracts the collection of single stream recyclable waste. Once collected, the single stream material is hauled to Casella Recycling’s Material Recovery Facility ("MRF") which is adjacent to the City’s solid waste facility where the recyclable material is sorted, baled, and shipped out to end users/manufacturers.
Manufacturers use the recovered recyclable material in place of virgin materials, which is beneficial for the environment. By separating these recyclable waste materials from other household waste, Lewiston’s residents help reduce the cost of solid waste (trash) disposal by making these materials-paper fiber, metal, plastic and glass-available for re-use in manufacturing.
When residents separate single stream recyclable waste from their household trash, they reduce the City’s expense for trash disposal because there is no disposal fee (for the City of Lewiston and its residents) for disposal of Single Stream Recyclable Waste. This is a cost-saving measure for the City of Lewiston and its taxpayers.
